Not just OnePlus phones, even Nokia 8, 6, 5, 3 & 2 won't support Google's Project Treble

after OnePlus announced late last month that it won't be supporting Project Treble initiative for fast Android updates, it looks like HMD Global is the next to back out as the company has stated that current Nokia models that include Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 (all of which were launched with Android 7 Nougat) will not be supporting Treble when they get their Android 8.0 Oreo updates.
HMD Global's chief product officer, Juho Sarvikas, explained that current Nokia phones not supporting Treble won't mean much for most users, but Nokia will have to work a little harder to get updates ready for its devices. In is important to note that while Treble is mandatory for devices launching with Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, OEMs have the option to not support it for phone running on older versions. While some companies like Essential and Huawei have supported Treble for the Essential Phone and Honor 8 Pro, respectively, others like HMD Global and OnePlus don't seem to support Google's desire to help manufacturers push out faster updates. HMD assures, however, that it will implement Treble in all future Android Oreo products., OnePlus fans have not taken the company's decision to back out from Project Treble lightly. Following the announcement, users launched a petition on change.org urging OnePlus founders Carl Pei and Pete Lau to re-evaluate their decision not to support Treble. As of now, the petition has crossed 10,000 signatures, which was the target to get OnePlus' attention. The company is yet to respond to this. It is now possible that Nokia fans will launch a similar petition following HMD's announcement.
One reason behind OnePlus' decision to back out of Treble could be because of the company's half yearly cycle and trend to discontinue year-old models. Typically, OnePlus follows a two-update policy. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were launched running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Android 7.0 Nougat hitting the devices in January and Android 8.0 Oreo having rolled out two weeks ago. Similarly, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are expected to receive Android Oreo and Android P before the company stops support. With this as the general rule, the company probably sees no reason to support Treble for its current lineup.
